Salary 40,000 in London - how much rent can I afford?

Hi everyone,

Next year I'm starting in a graduate position in London with a salary of 40,000 pounds. Not ever having lived in London (or the UK for that matter) I am at a loss to judge how much rent I would be able to afford. My husband will also be looking for work over there, and so ultimately we will have two salaries, but we are not sure how long we might need to just live on one salary (I'm expecting not too long because he's in IT).

Any ideas of the sort of rental budget that we would be looking at? My employer is in EC2, so hopefully will look to rent in the East or N1. Any ideas on good locations?
