Finding a flat sight unseen?

Greetings. My partner and I are Americans living in Geneva and are moving to London in September for a year. Does anyone have any tips about finding a place to live in Central London WITHOUT actually coming to London first and searching in person? Is this the worst idea we have ever considered? Thanks+
