Do i need a lawyer to extend EEA family visa?

Hello all,

I'm an American who just received an EEA Family visa to work in the UK.....by virtue of my wife being French.

My current EEA Family visa entitles me to live and work in the UK for 6 months, but it's my understanding that I need to apply for a 5 year extension immediately to avoid any disruption in my UK employment, as the process typically takes 6 months.

Have any of you gone through this process with the UK Home Office? Since hiring a lawyer to assist me will likely cost 1200-1500 GBP, I'd like to try to do this myself. Do you think this is possible? Any pitfalls to advice?

I appreciate any suggestions any of you might have.
