Dollar to Sterling transfers

I am moving to London in a couple of months, but will be paid in dollars. I will need to transfer money to my UK accounts each month to pay for bills, etc. While I have an HSBC account in NY, and my company offers help with accounts with Citibank, I find that their exchange rates are 4-5% over the wholesale rates. I have a friend who has wired money through eTrade, and watned to know if anyone in the UK has dealt with this.

I won't be charged fees through Citibank, but will be charged fees through HSBC. I am thinking that I may just need to open an account in London, and then can wire my money online through etrade from one account to another? I can't seem to talk to anyone at HSBC on the phone who knows anything about their international banking program. Help?
