Short Term Assignment

My company wants me to consider a short term assignment to Hove (6 months.) There does not seem to be much information out there around such short term assignments. Are these common? Is this a good way to try out the expat experience? Any pointers would be appreciated.

My wife and I would be moving from Portland Oregon to Hove, UK.

What they have talked about so far is:
- Paid in USD
- COLA +21%
- Company rented furnished apartment
- Company rented Car (including insurance)
- Company paid Cell Phone
- Tax Equalization (but they believe that an assignment this short will avoid local UK taxes...?)

It seems this might be light, but then again it is a short assignment (kind of like a long business trip.)

Anyway, I have never lived abroad, but I am eager to try it out.
