Where in London to live?

We're considering a move from Washington, DC to London. Husband would be working around Canary Wharf (so Blackfriars tube or Thames Link rail, I think). Possible work for me might be Univ. of London.

We have two small children (would be ~ 4 years old and 18 months, so looking for preschool then primary schools).

Suggestions about how to start thinking about areas to consider would be a help.

Also, how to think about appropriate cost of living relative to Washington, where we live in the city in a comfortable though not enormous detached home with yard and 7 minute walk to metro.

Many thanks in advance.
