I have a few questions that I'm hoping someone can help me out with. I'm looking to move to London over the summer and I'm trying to do as much research as possible before getting there.
First, as far as public transportation goes, it seems the oyster card is the way to go. It said on the information I found that it costs about 110 pounds per month for travel in zones 1-3. Is that for unlimited travel in that month?
Secondly, I'm a little unclear on how health insurance works in the UK. In the US, it's typically part of the compensation package from your employer. Does it work the same way in the UK, or will I be charged with obtaining private health insurance?
Thirdly, do you think it is more cost effective to live in the suburbs and commute in each day to work, or to find a flatshare in central london. While living in the burbs does not exactly thrill me, living in a flat with 4 flatmates and a tiny bedroom does not much thrill me either.
One last question. In general, and in your experience, what part of greater london generally has the most cost effective housing. I'm looking for an area that is relatively cost effective, but I also want a neighborhood with relatively low crime and ease of access to shopping and transportation. Am I asking too much.
I'm looking forward to the responses. Any advice you can provide will be enormously appreciated. :)
