UK Tax - Residence Requirement

I am wondering if anyone in the forum could advise me on a UK tax issue. I accepted an assignment for 1 year in Cambridge, UK and we (family of 4) will be moving there from the Boston area later this summer. My company is paying for the relocation costs, including housing, COLA, tax equalization for my income, car, utils, etc. My company's accountants will prepare my UK tax forms and will prepare our joint US tax return (federal and state)for us. My question concerns my spouse. His US company is willing for him to telecommute from the UK, but is dragging its heels in terms of providing any other form of tax support for his income, including setting up a "shadow" payroll so that his UK income tax can be paid. We are trying to figure out what our options are at this point so that the income my husband earns while he is "telecommuting" from the UK is properly handled.

One thing we were wondering about was how the residency requirements work in the UK. We believe there is a 183 day limit before UK tax filings are required. If my husband worked for 6 months out of the 1 year assignment and then took a leave of absence from his US employer but remained in the UK with us, would that work? If not, does anyone have experience with how you set up PAYE in the UK on your own?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
