auto insurance: US or UK policy?

Our family is going to be relocating to the UK for a 1-year stay, and we are trying to decide what our best options are for auto insurance. We asked our current insurance provider if they would cover us in the UK, but they told us that they don't write overseas policies. I would be interested to hear what experiences other folks have had with finding insurance-- is it better to use a US firm? Or is it more cost-effective to get a local (UK) company to provide auto coverage?
