just begining the expat

i've finaly decided i want to expat to uk. i do realize this will take some time. one of my 1st questions is..how is the economy there? just as bad as u.s.?
secondly...although i've spent many years in the telecom field, i have no degree from college. [yes i am enrolled, but a degree will be a long time off]. that being said, do i even stand a chance at employment in the u.k.? i'd be interested to hear from an experianced expat from u.s.
