From Ireland to London

Hi, Iam an Irish American living in Ireland (Republic)for the last 14 years. I am contemplating moving to London with my teenage daughter, depending on what happens with my current employment situation. Since I have an Irish passport, I undersrtand working in the UK won't be a problem. Does anyone know about access to council/social housing. I understand that people aren't eligible for housing benefit unless they've been in UK for 2 years. Any Irish been able to get affordable housing in UK soon after arriving? I just found this site and think it is absolutely brilliant. Thanks
