Have been in this flat as of late July 2008. Lease coming up for renewal and we find out the building is planning on shutting down the lift for 6 weeks. There have been some problems with the lift this past year and we were told the works would take 6 weeks to correct.
Our flat is on the 6th floor, so that means 7 flights of stairs up and down.
This is a VERY expensive flat in central London.
I'm scheduled to go back to the US next week until August 20 so this is not a good time to quickly look for another flat and move (which I would do if I were here) but I cannot change my plans at this point.
Are there any legal ramifications to this sort of thing? Can we force them to put us in a hotel for the duration of the lift outage? Should I contact Westminster Council and if so what department?
