Primary Schools in UK?

Hi all,

We are considering a move to England, near Oxford. My husband would work and I would stay home with our three boys - 6-year-old twins, and a 15-month-old.

How does primary school work there? I have found 3 or 4 schools near where we think we would live. Do you pick which one your kids go to? Or are you zoned by neighborhood to a particular school (like they do in the US)?

I have seen different descriptors for schools like - "community school", "voluntary controlled school", and "independent school". Does anyone know what those terms mean?

Any help/input you have is GREATLY appreciated. I am nervous about deciding on this move without having any clue as to how things work.

Thanks!
Nicole
