Establishing Credit in UK?

Hi All-

I am sure this topic has been raised earlier. I did try looking through the posts, but did not find what I was looking for so I figured I will ask away.

I am trying to see, how do I go by establishing credit in the UK? Is there anything as secured credit cards, like we have in the US? I know US credit does not mean anything here, anyway.

How about even buying a property? I have tried talking to the banks, and it seems that they are gazillion years behind in terms of providing solutions to small problems like these (No pun intended).

I am desperately looking for some help, as I am going to be here for a while. I want to buy a car, a property, and make a decent living so qualifying is not an issue. Can any one recommend anything? I did manage to open an account with HSBC, but getting a credit card seems to be out of reach.
