UK Student Visa Troubles

I'm in the midst of a long battle/wait for my UK Visa. School starts in a few weeks and I don't know when I will be notified on my application. I have been looking at entering the UK as a Student Visitor. You will be able to stay for up to 6months, but you are unable to extend your stay in the UK upon the completion of 6 months. Will it be possible for me to leave the country for a month or so and then and return to finish my studies? My program is a 12 month MA.
