Relocating to North England

We are an US family who has lived in Surrey for 7 months. We need to relocate to North England. We are interested in York and Newcastle. Any tips on these areas - neighborhoods, schools, etc? Also, curious if there is a US expat community in either North Yorkshire or Newcastle. Thanks!!!
