Marriage Visa

Hello we want to move back to the UK I am British and my wife is American. We are planning to move in may 2012 We have been married for nearly six years ans have been togetyer for eleven years when do you think she should apply for her visa and how long does it take for the visa application to go through and do we have to use it right away when she recieves the visa thanks for your help.
