Finding/securing housing prior to move

So we are wondering what the best way to find housing will be for us- we have budget constraints, of course, so would prefer not to have to hire an agent. We also, though, will likely *not* have the funds for a trip prior to the move- and are debating how to best approach things.
Would love to hear, esp those with kids in school, advice/tips for finding our home in the UK.
