How can I stay for one year?

Greetings Expat Experts!
My wife and I wish to rent a writer's cottage in the Lake District of England. As US citizens we can stay in the UK for 6 months without a visa. Question! Can we simply fly back to the U.S. toward the end of the 6 months, then return, maybe a week later, and have another 6 months?
