It was wonderful here, to answer a couple of your questions:
Wood is sold by weight. $100.00 U.S. a ton. One woman I spoke to says she goes through 2 tons of wood a winter. Another woman said 1 ton a winter. The first woman lived in a pretty large house, even according to American standards. She pays $300.00 in taxes (property) a year.
Gas- about 8 us dollars a liter. We rented a car - 20.00 us a day, for 2 days. We drove a ton- explored all over the place. We spent about $50.00 us on gas.
Food- very similar to U.S. Definetly- not cheap. On the whole it tasted better, especially the ice cream! We did get full faster- (lack of chemicals in it perhaps?)
Our hotel- clean-practical-was only $60.00 us a night., in Punta del Este.
We felt very, very safe the entire trip. People were patient and helpful, with my limited Spanish! I did use my Spanish, had to. Renting a car, with my limited Spanish, and the agents even more limited English was challenging, but I did it!
Having a Spanish/English dictionary with me was helpful.
According to people I met, there are reasons why they chose Uruguay, over Ecuador or Argentina. Valid reasons, I agree with them.
For those of you considering a move- do visit. I would say it's a must.
The pace of life is slower, people don't seem as stressed as in the U.S. I never saw anyone raise their voice to their kids, not once. Kids are respected, and in turn, they are respectful. FAmily is very important.
Gotta board my plane back.. I will be glad to answer any other questions. Hope this info. helps.
