Most applications are from Argentina ( 1,645 )and Brazil (634 ) but also Peru (376 ) , Columbia (231) and small numbers from Paraguay and Ecuador. The new law favours those born in a Mercosur country or those who have Uruguayan relatives. All are automatically granted permanent residency here under Law No. 19.254 without the need for temporary residency.
Most of the Mercosur applicants are between 20 and 50 years of age
Amongst other countries,
there were 530 applications from Spain , 209 from Cuba, 207 from the US and 1 from each of Latvia, Macedonia and Burkina Faso.
Between October 2014 and May 2015 there were 2,908 applications. Two were denied and 177 were cancelled. There are currently 3,966 pending applications and 1,980 appointments scheduled between now and October to initiate the process.
