internet deadzone

I live in a section of Punta del Este where I, unfortunately, am forced to use a sim wifi router. My service provider is Movistar and at first the service was good, never great. Over time the signal that I can receive seems to have gotten weaker.
From doing a bit of research I have the same issues as rural areas do, that is the a lack of adequate signal strength. I recently have thought about getting an outside antenna to increase the signal strength. So, therein lies my question. Has anyone had experience with using such an antenna? I am also open to any other helpful suggestions! Thanks
