Hello all,
New to the forum and looking forward to learning from you all. Uruguay has been an interesting place to start a cattle/crop land business and we've learned a lot over the past few years, but there is still much for me to learn and that brings me to my first question....
does anyone here work in or understand the cattle industry in Uruguay? I would love to pick the brains of someone that would be willing to share some info. Specifically:
1) Why does the local price of beef not coincide with the global price? We have our theories on it, but it makes no sense that Uruguayan grass-fed beef should sell to a processor so much lower than the global price.
2) Is there a website where you can check the current local price of cattle/beef?
3) What are the rules regarding registering cattle with the department of agriculture?
4) What is the norm for buying and selling transactions of cattle here?
In the US, almost all of this business process is transparent and verifiable, and as we've found out here, that is far from the truth with usually any process having several middlemen that charge hidden fees that significantly affect your margin.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Andrew
