Moving to Monteviedo as an American

I am planning on moving to Uruguay this summer, July and August. I am an American and am fluent in Spanish. I have a Bachelor’s degree and a TEOSL certification and worked for two years teaching English in Spain and a year teaching Spanish in the Caribbean. I have a couple of questions for those on the ground in the Montevideo area about picking up work as an English teacher.

First, the hiring seasons for academies, school’s universities? I have read that in mid Spring and late July through August are the best times, but would like to verify that.

Second, what is the best route in terms of earning and hours worked for English teachers? Is it better to work in academies, public or private schools, is it possible to work in the University setting?

Additionally, how about private classes? In Spain, there was great demand for private classes and I could easily supplement my basic income working in the public school with a few extra hours of private classes on the side? Similar in Uruguay? Also, if there are private classes available, what is the average going rate?

What can one expect to earn working a typical job in an academy vs. school or university?

Finally, I have read that as an American I can arrive in Uruguay without a job offer and on a tourist visa. Then, if I get a job offer I can stay in country and process for the basic work or resident visa? Is this true in your case or anyone you know? Or is it just as easy to decent work teaching without having to deal with the bureaucracy? As an American in Spain it was pretty harmless and easy to overstay and visa and work as long as you wanted to, don’t know how relaxed they are on this type of enforcement in Uruguay, but am curious to know.

I have found a large variety of answers to these questions, so I thought I would post on this forum and inquire of the experts on the ground.

Thank you for any help or insight you can offer!
