Freelancer Visa

Hi. I'll be traveling to Montevideo for three months and would like to obtain a temporary visa to stay longer. Does anyone know if a temporary visa can be obtained by freelancers? My clients are all based in the States, so my income will not be from Uruguay. Everything I've seen in my research (including the Department of Immigration) says that I must have a letter of employment from Uruguay. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
