Importing grandmaothers bed to Uruguay

My grandmother was a talented artist who drew, painted, made jewelry, and carved wood. She built herself a lovely carved 4 post bed of Mahogany with carved spiral posts. She also made beds for all the family members. We wanted this bed as it is special and as a canopy bed is well suited for mosquito netting.
The California rats had made short work of the mattress and box spring, but the bed frame was ok, so I crated it up and shipped it off to Uruguay. $240 crating materials, $695 shipping cost.
Arrival in Uruguay cost an additional $950 and today I paid the Despachante Aduanero $1,857 so as to be able to pick up the crate at the port.
First: I wanted this family heirloom badly enough to be willing to pay.
Second: This was my experiment to see what importing personal property to Uruguay is like. (only for the very rich!)
That it cost almost $4000 to import a bed frame is to me, well, absolutely staggering! Experiment over. No more importation! I hope that this experience saves other people from the excessive expense that we just paid. EVERYTHING must be in your container(s) when you first move here and get residency, One shot only!
