Moving to My Tho, Vietnam

My wife and I are moving to Vietnam sometime in the next few years as I will be retiring. My wife is Vietnamese and we want to live near her family in a rural area there. I am wondering if someone could provide us with information on obtaining an extended visa, such as a work visa. I have heard that there are tourist companies in Ho Chi Minh City that can provide this service. Also, I have heard that the government of Vietnam imposes a 50% income tax on persons living there. How do expats deal with the visa and tax issues?
