Adopting my Wife's Daughter

I want to Adopt my Wife's 12yo daughter so she can come under my name and She can become an Australian Citizen and get the same benefits as my Son her Brother.
Has any one gone through the process?
My Wife and I don't want to live in Australia for 3 years which is the alternative.
