Long stay visa for Vietnam

I am a U.S citizen currently living as a retiree in Bangkok. I have visited Vietnam 4 times in the last 5 years, all on 30 day visas visiting Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau, and Nha Trang.
My questions are: how can I get a 3 month visit visa, as currently the only visa the Vietnamese embassy in Bangkok will issue to me is a 30 day visitor visa?
Can a 30day visitor visa be extended in Vietnam for a 3 month stay and if so what is the cost?
