Work Visa Processing Time

I currently work in China. I am interested in working in Vietnam and I have a skype interview arranged for next week. The job starts in August. I'm an American with a Chinese wife.

Would there be enough time to process the required work visas?
Is it common to enter on a tourist visa and have it switched over to a work permit?
