Living in HCMC but working in the USA as a software engineer

A little bit about myself. I was born in Vietnam but migrated over to the USA at a very young age and it has been around 11 years since I've been to Vietnam. I speak broken Vietnamese and proficient English; enough of both to get myself into trouble. I am also a U.S. Army veteran.

I'm on the verge of asking my employer to let me work remotely in Vietnam for a few months or perhaps becoming an expat myself and work remotely permenantly. I've heard of many expats working as a teacher but since my field's work can be done remotely; I was wondering if there were any laws I had to concern myself with when living in Vietnam and working remotely for an American employer.

Would love to hear from both the experience of expats; specifically those that fall under the category of being able to be employed remotely.

Since I speak broken Vietnamese, I was also wondering if there was a community of expats in Vietnam or a platform to find a guide or a friend that just happens to be learning English and speak Vietnamese well.
