Transportation to Leon and Granada from Managua

I can't understand why buses sem to be so costly between Managua and Leon or Managua and Granda Thought that the "chcken buses" were very inexpensive. Aren't both places only just a little over an hour from Managua? I will be landing in Managua Monday evening and want to check out both Leon and Granada as possible places to move to early next year. Any cheaper way to get to both places? Advice please.....
