Debit card backup

I’ve been searching the forum for how others back up their US debit card, but not finding much.

I’ll be in Granada and the coast area for 3 ½ months, then to Ecuador for a month and a half to get certified for teaching English as a second language, and then it’s up in the air.

I’ll be taking my debit card from the credit union, and a small amount of cash for when I arrive.

But that leaves all my financial resources tied to my debit card, so I’m trying to figure out ways to cover myself if it gets lost or stolen.

The ideas I have so far:

One idea is to open an account at BANCentro when I get there so I have another account and debit card, but I read somewhere most Nica bank cards are not accepted outside of the country. That also might take a while to set up.

Another idea is to buy a couple prepaid VISA cards here and put some money on them so I can pull cash from an ATM in an emergency.

A third idea is to leave cash here with a friend and if necessary he can use Western Union to wire money to one of the three western unions I see listed for Granada, but I’m not sure how readily a bank would cash them for me.

Any other ideas or comments on these?

Thanks,
Bob
