To Costa Rica & Back (visa)

I have been in Nicaragua for about five months, mostly Granada. I renewed my tourist visa once from the immigration office in Granada. I now have to travel to Costa Rica and return to get another three months' tourist visa. For various reasons I wish to go by bus and spend as little time in Costa Rica this time as possible. Thus I intend to take the bus from Granada to Rivas early in the morning, then the bus (TransNica?) from Rivas to Penas Blancas, cross into Costa Rica and then return. I am told there is no requirement to stay three days in Costa Rica, If I have to stay for that time, I intend to take the bus to La Cruz and then return to Penas Blancas.

I will be traveling very light.

I would appreciate any advice anyone who has made this trip might have--what bus lines, stations in Rivas, etc., the best time to go, how long the trip is to the border, and so forth. From talking to others, and my own research the only glitches I see are: first, the Costa Rican requirement that one have a return bus ticket, which, presumably, one can only buy in Costa Rica, and second, that La Cruz may be short of accomodations without reservations.

My spoken Spanish is fairly rudimentary but increasingly serviceable.

Also if there is anyone who is making a simple quick trip and back in the first or second week of January and who wants to travel together, or a passenger to share expenses, I would be interested.

All information very appreciated--and cordial thanks.
