Possible Nicaragua move

My husband and I are considering moving to Latin America with our three kids, (we home school). My husband likes Nicaragua but I had heard that kidnappings are common. It's hard to know what to believe. We like smaller towns, not big cities and just want a reasonably safe place to raise our kids. Please, can someone who actually knows tell me about crime in Nicaragua? Would it be a good place to raise kids?
