In San Juan del Sur and looking for a change

Anyone have any experience in mountains? We are extremely budget minded, and we're not retired, and living on savings while here. We'd like a town that is similar in size to SJdS. We don't mind some expats ourists, but here it's mostly a party scene, and we're over it. I'd like somewhere kind of tranquil, but also somewhere we can sit at a local bar and have a few beers (we tried that in Panama and they did not appreciate a gringa in the bar). Any recommendations on a good mountain town, with a little nightlife, for a couple of budget travelers?
