major flooding

There is major flooding in parts of the country. Ometepe and the southern areas are reporting 24 hours of rain. Parts of the Rivas department were hit hard. Several thousand people have fled their homes and, of course, it is the poorest people who have been hit the hardest. Power and roads are out in many parts of the country.

Nicaragua does have a fairly good civil defense response system, the First Lady is in charge and she has been on the job. The bad weather is expected to last until Saturday. This is a good time to stay home and be off the roads so the emergency responders can do their jobs.
