energy bill

i'm working on building a house on the ocean. someone was telling me their energy bill was running between $1,400-$3,000 per month (!!). they were renting the house when they weren't there and my guess is people left air conditioners running, but i'm just curious what type of bills others are seeing in the area. if you run any kind of A/C at night it's probably more relevant since we have a young child and we will probably have to run it in the bedroom.

thanks for any input!
