Visiting Nicaragua by Car

Is there any problem driving from Panama to Nicaragua by car? I have an old Toyota diesel Land Cruiser with Panama plates. Do you need any special kind of insurance? I would be travelling with my Panamanian passport although I also have an American passport. I live near the border with Costa Rica. I am told it is about an eight hour drive to Granada from where I live. I have lived in Panama for 17 years and speak fluent Spanish thanks to my previous marriage to a women who never spoke English in our home. I am curious about Nicaragua as I have never spent any time there and would like to spend a couple of weeks in Granada. I am wondering what the cost of living might be in Nicaragua as compared to Panama. It has gotten more expensive over the years in Panama but still it is less than in Costa Rica.
