Safe to drive to Nicaragua?

Hello. I am new to the forum and have a question to throw out there. My husband and I are moving to Nicaragua. We will fly there and apply for our pensionado and cedula. My husband is then flying back to the states and driving our car with a friend and towing our 8x10 cargo trailer with our belongings. Three questions: Is this crazy to do? What, if any problems might he encounter at each border? We are bringing our minivan and wondering how it will survive the roads, etc?

Thank you so much for any insight one can give me. Also, if someone out there has driven, what if any problems did you encounter?
