Travelling through Nicaragua

Hi, I have a question about the actual situation in Nicaragua. We're actually in Costa Rica and are planing to travel up to the north to Mexico city till the beginn of January. The initial plan was to travel all up with the bus and stop on the way, but I don't know if it is save to travel to Nicaragua at the moment or if it is better to fly directly to Guatemala (basically I would prefer not flying if it's possible).
Does anybody have some more information about the situation in Nicaragua at the moment? Thank you very much in advance for an answer!
