Thank you for taking a moment to read this message. I am a US citizen. I am considering emigration to Albania. I see from al.usembassy.gov that an application for a residency permit requires, quote:
The Albanian authorities require you to submit an “Affidavit of Eligibility for Residency Permit in the Republic of Albania”, which is a sworn statement regarding criminal history and other details notarized by a consular officer at the U.S. Embassy in Tirana.
I am already fully aware that it is Albanian authorites, not the US Embassy, that makes this determination. I am not looking for an official endorsement or cut and paste offical language from you, simply human to human kind advice and guidance.
While I realize you cannot give a definitive answer, I anticipate that you most likely have seen cases similar to mine and can offer some guidance. I have a criminal conviction in the United States for second degree assault and criminal threatening.
By way of context: When this happened, I was under a great deal of financial stress and had ceased taking my psychiatric medication. I turned myself in and accepted a sentence offered of five years. I feel that I've more than paid the punishment for my crime, which was over 30 years ago. I am 60 years old, and hardly pose a threat to anyone. I'm simply searching for a place to live out my few remaining years where the cost of living is less than here in America, because I susbist on a very small social security disability pension.
In your experience, and to your knowledge, would such a conviction be likely to prevent me from obtaining an Albanian residency permit? I am not asking you to say for certain, I realize you cannot do that.
I am already fully aware that it is Albanian authorites, not the US Embassy, that makes this determination. Again, what I am asking is, in your experience, and to your knowledge, how would the Albanian authorities be most likely to recieve my application? I'm simply trying to not waste my time or that of anyone else.
I am simply trying to determine whether or not to keep Albania on my list of potenial countries to move to. Your proactive assistance is much appreciated. Thank you.
