Was thinking about Belize, but switched to StL

I am looking to be an expat for 3-6 months. I work from home, just need to be connected to the internet. I don't plan on bringing a car, I have my international driver's license, so I figure if I want to go exploring, I could just rent a car? Is there a public transportation system? How reliable is the internet (do I need to be in a city to get it)? I lived in Europe for several years, and exploring just meant hopping on a train or a bus - I don't know if it's the same here. I was thinking of going to Belize, but after reading Bobby's notes, I switched over here. Any tips would be amazing. Oh, I am planning on coming mid-September.
