6 month rule?

I was hoping to find information on the "6-month rule". As an American, I can stay up to 6 mths in the UK, but there does not seem to be a rule on how long I need to be out of the country before I can return. I hope to base my 12-month stay in London - but will be traveling throughout the UK and Europe. I wanted to rent a flat for 12 months and spend 4-5 months in the UK - then head to Spain for 5-6 weeks and return to the UK for another few months before heading to Italy for 4-5 weeks. Can anyone address this issue? I have scoured the internet and looked at all gov.uk sites for an answer. I'm not going to "permanently." live in the UK - just base & travel from there. I will not be working as I am retired and have plenty of income to sustain my expenses.
