What do I need to know before moving to Yemen?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Yemen, they said:

"Yemen is a country with a complex political and security situation, so it is important for expats to research the current situation before moving there. Expats should also be aware that the country is facing a humanitarian crisis, with a lack of basic services and infrastructure. It is also important to note that the country is largely cash-based, so expats should bring enough money to cover their expenses. Additionally, expats should be aware that the country is largely conservative and that they should respect local customs and traditions. Finally, expats should be aware that the country is facing a severe water shortage, so they should take steps to conserve water," remarked one expat in Yemen.

How do I find a place to live in Yemen?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Yemen can be a challenge. It is important to research the area you are interested in living in and to be aware of the security situation. You can start by looking for rental listings online, or by asking friends and family who may have connections in the area. Additionally, you can contact local real estate agents who may be able to help you find a suitable place to live. It is also important to consider the cost of living in the area, as well as the availability of amenities such as transportation, healthcare, and education. Finally, it is important to be aware of the cultural norms and customs of the area you are considering living in," replied a member in Yemen.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Yemen?

"Expat homes and apartments in Yemen tend to be modern and comfortable, with amenities such as air conditioning, satellite television, and internet access. Many expats choose to live in compounds, which are gated communities that provide additional security and privacy. These compounds often have shared amenities such as swimming pools, gyms, and playgrounds. Expats may also choose to live in villas, which are larger homes with private gardens and outdoor spaces," said one expat who made the move to Yemen.

What is the average cost of housing in Yemen?

If you are thinking about moving to Yemen, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Yemen is generally quite low, with many basic dwellings costing very little. However, the cost of housing can vary greatly depending on the location and quality of the dwelling. In the capital city of Sana'a, for example, the cost of housing is significantly higher than in other parts of the country," explained one expat living in Yemen.

Should I buy or rent a home in Yemen?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Yemen, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"Buying a home in Yemen can be a great investment, as the country is experiencing a period of economic growth and stability. However, it is important to consider the risks associated with buying property in a country that is still recovering from a civil war. Renting a home in Yemen may be a more cost-effective option, as it allows you to avoid the upfront costs associated with buying a home and gives you the flexibility to move if needed. Additionally, renting a home in Yemen can provide you with access to amenities and services that may not be available in a purchased home. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Yemen should be based on your individual needs and financial situation," replied a member in Yemen.

What should I pack when moving to Yemen?

We asked people living in Yemen to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Yemen, it is important to pack clothing that is appropriate for the climate. Lightweight, breathable fabrics such as cotton and linen are ideal for the hot and humid weather. It is also important to bring a good supply of sunscreen and insect repellent. Additionally, it is recommended to bring a first aid kit, as well as any necessary medications. It is also important to bring a few items to make your new home more comfortable, such as bedding, kitchenware, and basic furniture. Finally, it is important to bring any important documents, such as passports and visas," remarked one expat in Yemen.

We asked people in Yemen if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"It is important to be aware of cultural norms when visiting Yemen. It is important to dress modestly, especially for women, and to avoid wearing revealing clothing. It is also important to be respectful of religious beliefs and practices, and to avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics or religion. It is also important to be aware of local customs and to avoid touching people of the opposite sex, as this is considered inappropriate. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local language and to avoid speaking English in public, as this may be seen as disrespectful," said one expat in Yemen.

How are healthcare services Yemen?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Yemen, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Yemen are limited due to the ongoing civil war and the resulting economic crisis. The public healthcare system is inadequate and underfunded, leading to poor quality services and limited access to medical care. Foreign residents have limited access to the public healthcare system, as it is mainly reserved for Yemeni citizens. Expats in Yemen typically rely on private healthcare services, which are more expensive but offer better quality care. Private clinics and hospitals are available in major cities, but access to these services is limited in rural areas," remarked one expat in Yemen.

What are medical services in Yemen like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Yemen, they replied:

"Medical services in Yemen are severely limited due to the ongoing conflict and lack of resources. Many hospitals and clinics have been destroyed or lack the necessary equipment and supplies to provide adequate care. Access to medical care is further hindered by the lack of trained medical personnel and the difficulty of travelling to medical facilities due to the insecurity of the country. In addition, the cost of medical care is often prohibitively expensive for many Yemenis. Despite these challenges, some organizations are working to provide medical assistance to those in need," wrote one expat living in Yemen.
