What do I need to know before moving to Paraguay?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Paraguay, they said:

"Paraguay is a Spanish-speaking country, so it is important for expats to have a basic understanding of the language before moving there. Paraguay is a largely rural country, so expats should be prepared to experience a slower pace of life than in more urban areas. Paraguay has a tropical climate, so expats should be prepared for hot and humid weather. Paraguay is a relatively safe country, but expats should still take precautions to protect themselves and their belongings. Expats should also be aware that Paraguay has a high rate of poverty, so they should be prepared to encounter some level of poverty and inequality. Finally, expats should research the local culture and customs before moving to Paraguay to ensure they are respectful of the local culture," remarked one expat who made the move to Paraguay.

Additionally, social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter can be used to connect with people who may have rental properties available. Asking friends, family, and colleagues who live in Paraguay can be a great way to find a place to live. Expat homes and apartments in Paraguay are often located in the suburbs of larger cities, such as Asunción, and offer easy access to shopping, restaurants, and other amenities. Expats may also choose to live in smaller towns and villages, where they can experience a more traditional way of life," replied a member in Paraguay.

However, it is important to consider the pros and cons of both buying and renting before making a decision. Bring clothing that is suitable for the hot and humid climate, such as lightweight, breathable fabrics. It is also important to bring items that will help you adjust to the culture, such as a phrasebook or dictionary to help you learn the language. Additionally, it is a good idea to bring items that will help you feel at home, such as photos of family and friends, favorite books, and other items that will make you feel comfortable," said one expat in Paraguay.

Foreign residents are able to access the public healthcare system, but they may need to pay for some services.
