What do I need to know before moving to Cambodia?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Cambodia, they said:

"Cambodia is a beautiful and diverse country with a rich culture and history. Expats should be aware that the language spoken in Cambodia is Khmer, and it is important to learn some basic phrases before moving. Expats should also be aware that the cost of living in Cambodia is relatively low, but the quality of goods and services may not be as high as in other countries. Additionally, expats should be aware that the healthcare system in Cambodia is not as developed as in other countries, and it is important to have adequate health insurance. Finally, expats should be aware that the climate in Cambodia is tropical, with hot and humid weather year-round," said one expat in Cambodia.

How do I find a place to live in Cambodia?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One of the best ways to find a place to live in Cambodia is to use online resources such as websites like Expat.com, Cambodia Expat Network, and Cambodia Property. These websites provide listings of available properties, as well as information about the local rental market. Additionally, it is possible to find a place to live by asking around in the local community, as many people in Cambodia are willing to rent out their homes. Finally, it is also possible to find a place to live by contacting a real estate agent, who can help you find a suitable property," remarked one expat who made the move to Cambodia.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Cambodia?

"Expat homes and apartments in Cambodia tend to be modern and comfortable, with air conditioning, internet access, and other amenities. Many expats choose to live in gated communities, which offer a greater sense of security and privacy. Expat homes and apartments often come with a variety of amenities, such as swimming pools, gyms, and other recreational facilities. Expats also have access to a wide range of international restaurants, bars, and shops," said one expat in Cambodia.

What is the average cost of housing in Cambodia?

If you are thinking about moving to Cambodia, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Cambodia varies depending on the location and type of accommodation. Generally, renting a one-bedroom apartment in a city center can cost around $200 to $400 per month, while a two-bedroom apartment can cost around $300 to $500 per month. Outside of the city center, prices can be significantly lower," said one expat in Cambodia.

Should I buy or rent a home in Cambodia?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Cambodia, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"Buying a home in Cambodia can be a great investment, as property prices are still relatively low. However, it is important to consider the costs associated with buying a home, such as legal fees, taxes, and other associated costs. Renting a home in Cambodia can be a more cost-effective option, as it allows you to avoid the upfront costs associated with buying a home. Additionally, renting a home can provide more flexibility, as you can move to a different location more easily. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Cambodia should be based on your individual needs and financial situation," said one expat who made the move to Cambodia.

What should I pack when moving to Cambodia?

We asked people living in Cambodia to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Cambodia, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the climate and culture. Bring lightweight, breathable clothing that is appropriate for the hot and humid weather. A hat and sunglasses are also essential for protection from the sun. It is also important to bring a mosquito net and insect repellent to protect against mosquito-borne illnesses. Additionally, bring any necessary medications and a first-aid kit. To help you adjust to the culture, bring a phrasebook and a guidebook to help you navigate the country. Finally, don't forget to bring a few items from home to make your new home feel more comfortable," commented one expat who made the move to Cambodia.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Cambodia?

We asked people in Cambodia if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"It is important to be respectful of Cambodian culture and customs when visiting the country. It is considered rude to point with your finger, so it is best to gesture with your whole hand. It is also important to dress modestly, as showing too much skin is considered inappropriate. It is also important to be aware of the local customs and traditions, and to avoid touching people on the head or pointing your feet at them. Additionally, it is important to be respectful of religious sites and to avoid taking photos without permission. Finally, it is important to be aware of the local language and to avoid speaking loudly or using offensive language," commented one expat who made the move to Cambodia.

How are healthcare services Cambodia?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Cambodia, they replied:

"Cambodia has a public healthcare system that provides basic healthcare services to its citizens. The quality of public healthcare in Cambodia is generally considered to be low, with limited access to medical equipment and supplies. Foreign residents in Cambodia have access to the public healthcare system, but the quality of care is not as high as in other countries. Expats in Cambodia often use private healthcare services, which are more expensive but offer better quality care. Private healthcare services are available in major cities, such as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, and are often used by expats who are not covered by public healthcare," commented one expat who moved to Cambodia.

"Specifically, the International Clinics are preferred. CT Clinic can be good or not so good. My doctor here is Russian. Here, 4 years of college and a score of 50% on the final exam qualifies a Cambodian to become a doctor. Best to avoid of course," said one expat.

What are medical services in Cambodia like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Cambodia, they replied:

"Cambodia has a limited number of medical facilities and services, with most of the country's medical care being provided by private clinics and hospitals. The quality of medical care varies greatly, with some facilities providing excellent care while others are inadequate. The availability of medicines and medical supplies is also limited, and many medications are not available in the country. In addition, the cost of medical care is often high, making it difficult for many people to access the care they need," offered one expat living in Cambodia.
