What do I need to know before moving to Myanmar?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Myanmar, they said:

"Before moving to Myanmar, expats should be aware of the country's political and economic situation. It is important to research the local laws and regulations, as well as the cultural norms and expectations. Expats should also be aware of the cost of living in Myanmar, as it is generally lower than in other countries. Additionally, expats should be prepared to face language barriers, as English is not widely spoken in Myanmar. Finally, expats should be aware of the visa requirements for entering and staying in Myanmar," explained one expat living in Myanmar.

How do I find a place to live in Myanmar?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Myanmar can be a challenge, but there are a few options available. One option is to look for rental properties online, such as on websites like Myanmar Real Estate or Myanmar Property Exchange. You can also look for rental properties in newspapers or magazines, or contact a local real estate agent. Additionally, you can look for rental properties in person by visiting local neighborhoods and asking around. Finally, you can also look for shared housing options, such as hostels or guesthouses, which can be a great way to save money while living in Myanmar," replied a member in Myanmar.

What is a typical expat home or apartment like in Myanmar?

"Expat homes and apartments in Myanmar tend to be modern and comfortable, with air conditioning, internet access, and other amenities. Many expats choose to live in gated communities, which offer a greater sense of security and privacy. Expat homes and apartments are often located in the city center, close to restaurants, shops, and other amenities. Expats may also choose to live in more rural areas, where they can enjoy the natural beauty of the country," explained one expat living in Myanmar.

What is the average cost of housing in Myanmar?

If you are thinking about moving to Myanmar, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The cost of housing in Myanmar varies greatly depending on the location and type of housing. Generally, housing in urban areas tends to be more expensive than in rural areas. Prices for apartments and houses in cities such as Yangon and Mandalay can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars per month. In rural areas, the cost of housing is usually much lower, with basic housing often costing less than $100 per month," commented one expat who made the move to Myanmar.

Should I buy or rent a home in Myanmar?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Myanmar, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"When deciding whether to buy or rent a home in Myanmar, it is important to consider your budget, lifestyle, and long-term plans. Buying a home can be a great investment, as it can provide you with a stable place to live and the potential for appreciation in value. However, it can also be a large financial commitment, requiring a down payment and ongoing mortgage payments. Renting a home can be a more affordable option, as it typically requires a smaller upfront cost and no long-term commitment. Additionally, renting can provide more flexibility, as you can move more easily if your circumstances change. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Myanmar should be based on your individual needs and preferences," commented one expat who made the move to Myanmar.

What should I pack when moving to Myanmar?

We asked people living in Myanmar to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Myanmar, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the climate and culture. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing that is appropriate for the hot and humid climate. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Bring a mosquito net and insect repellent to protect yourself from mosquitoes and other insects. Bring a first aid kit and any necessary medications. Pack a few items that will help you adjust to the culture, such as books about Myanmar and its people. Finally, make sure to bring a valid passport and any other necessary documents," remarked one expat who made the move to Myanmar.

What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Myanmar?

We asked people in Myanmar if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"It is important to be respectful of local customs and traditions when visiting Myanmar. Avoid making negative comments about the country or its people, as this can be seen as offensive. Refrain from taking photographs of people without their permission, as this is considered rude. Additionally, it is important to dress modestly and to avoid public displays of affection. It is also important to be aware of religious sites and to show respect when visiting them," commented one expat who made the move to Myanmar.

Why do people move to Myanmar?

When we asked people why foreigners move to Myanmar, they responded:

"Myanmar is an attractive destination for expats due to its rich culture, diverse landscapes, and friendly people. The country offers a unique experience for those looking to explore a new culture and way of life. Expats are also drawn to Myanmar for its low cost of living, which makes it an ideal place to live and work. Additionally, the country is home to a wide variety of activities and attractions, from ancient temples and pagodas to bustling markets and vibrant nightlife. How are healthcare services Myanmar?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Myanmar, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Myanmar are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is largely underfunded and understaffed, resulting in a lack of quality care. The public healthcare system is also limited in its scope, with many services not available to the general public. Foreign residents have limited access to the public healthcare system, and most expats in Myanmar opt to use private healthcare services. Private healthcare services are generally of higher quality than public services, but they are also more expensive. Expats in Myanmar may also be able to access some public healthcare services, such as vaccinations, but they are not eligible for the same level of care as citizens," offered one expat living in Myanmar.

What are medical services in Myanmar like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Myanmar, they replied:

"Myanmar has a public health system that provides basic medical services to its citizens. However, the quality of care is often inadequate due to a lack of resources and trained personnel. Private health care is available in the country, but it is expensive and often out of reach for many people. The government has been working to improve the quality of medical services in the country, but progress has been slow. In rural areas, access to medical care is often limited and the quality of care is often lower than in urban areas," commented one expat who moved to Myanmar.
