We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One of the best ways to find a place to live in Barbados is to use online resources such as real estate websites. These websites typically list a variety of properties for rent or sale, including apartments, villas, and houses. Additionally, you can search for properties on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. Should I buy or rent a home in Barbados?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Barbados, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

"We rented at first so we could "test" out the different regions and be sure of a location before investing in purchasing a place," explained one expat living in Clapham Ridge, Barbados.

"Buying a home in Barbados can be a great investment, as the island is a popular tourist destination and real estate prices are expected to rise in the future. However, it is important to consider the cost of living in Barbados, as well as the cost of maintaining a home, before making a decision. Renting a home in Barbados can be a great option for those who are not ready to commit to buying a home, as it allows for more flexibility and can be more cost-effective in the short-term. Ultimately, the decision to buy or rent a home in Barbados should be based on individual needs and preferences," said one expat in Barbados.

What should I pack when moving to Barbados?

We asked people living in Barbados to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded:

"When moving to Barbados, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the tropical climate. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing such as shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses. Bring a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. Bring comfortable shoes for walking on the beach and exploring the island. Don't forget to pack swimwear and beach towels. Bring a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings. Be sure to bring any necessary medications and toiletries. Lastly, don't forget to bring your passport and other important documents," said one expat in Barbados.

We asked people in Barbados if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"My first time at the Oistins fish fry I saw "Dolphin" on the menu and was a bit upset at the thought of eating dolphin and went on a bit of a rant about saving the dolphins... only to find out that in Barbados "dolphin fish" is actually Dorado or Maui Maui and not a Dolphin at all," said one expat who made the move to Hastings.

"It is important to be respectful of local customs and traditions when visiting Barbados. It is considered rude to point with your finger, so it is best to use an open hand when gesturing. It is also important to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. It is also important to be aware of the local language and to avoid using profanity. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local laws and to avoid engaging in activities that are illegal in Barbados.
