What do I need to know before moving to Ethiopia?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Ethiopia, they said:

"Ethiopia is a culturally rich and diverse country with a long and fascinating history. It is important to research the local customs and etiquette before moving to Ethiopia. Expats should also be aware of the local language, Amharic, and consider taking language classes to help with communication. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local climate and the potential for extreme weather conditions. Expats should also be aware of the local healthcare system and consider taking out health insurance. Finally, it is important to research the local cost of living and to budget accordingly," said one expat in Ethiopia.

How do I find a place to live in Ethiopia?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Ethiopia can be a challenge, but there are a few options available. One option is to look for rental properties in the major cities such as Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, and Mekelle. You can search online for rental listings or contact a local real estate agent for assistance. Another option is to look for furnished apartments or houses for rent in the suburbs of the major cities. You can also look for shared housing options such as hostels, guesthouses, and homestays. Finally, you can look for long-term rental options in rural areas, which may be more affordable than urban areas," replied a member in Ethiopia.

Should I buy or rent a home in Ethiopia?

If you have not spent a lot of time in Ethiopia, you should rent before even thinking about buying. We asked expats there about the buy vs. rent decision:

We asked people in Ethiopia if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!:

"It is important to be aware of cultural norms when visiting Ethiopia. It is considered rude to point with your finger, so it is best to gesture with your whole hand. It is also important to dress modestly, as revealing clothing is considered inappropriate. It is also important to be aware of religious customs, as Ethiopia is a predominantly Christian country. It is also important to be respectful of elders and to avoid discussing politics or religion in public. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local language and to avoid speaking English in public, as this can be seen as disrespectful," said one expat who made the move to Ethiopia.

How are healthcare services Ethiopia?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Ethiopia, they replied:

"Healthcare services in Ethiopia are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is largely funded by the government and is the primary source of healthcare for the majority of the population. The quality of public healthcare varies greatly, with some areas having better access to resources and better trained staff than others. Foreign residents do have access to the public healthcare system, although the quality of care may not be as high as in other countries. Expats in Ethiopia typically use the private healthcare system, which is more expensive but offers higher quality care," wrote one expat living in Ethiopia.

What are medical services in Ethiopia like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Ethiopia, they replied:

"Medical services in Ethiopia are generally limited and of low quality. The country has a shortage of medical personnel, and many medical facilities lack basic equipment and supplies. The majority of medical care is provided by the government, but there are also some private clinics and hospitals. Access to medical care is often limited due to poverty and lack of transportation. Vaccination programs are available, but coverage is low. Mental health services are limited, and there is a lack of awareness about mental health issues," commented one expat who moved to Ethiopia.
